SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Indiana State Police are working to debunk online rumors surrounding last week’s deadly officer-involved shooting that killed 25-year-old Hannah Aberegg, a mother of two.

Aberegg died May 6 at the Phillips 66 on Portage Avenue. Police said her mother requested a welfare check for her daughter, who was having a medical episode.

Clarifying the response

Indiana State Police said Aberegg was armed with a handgun and pulled it out during the interaction with police, causing a South Bend officer to fire. Police did not dispatch a crisis response team because the call came in for a woman in distress who was also armed, and the team doesn’t respond to these types of calls per protocol.

Investigators also addressed rumors online about the initial response. Only South Bend police and St. Joseph County police responded to the gas station. Indiana State Police arrived after the shooting happened for the investigation.

Body camera footage timeline

State Police said the investigations typically take several weeks to complete to ensure an accurate investigation. Despite community calls to release the video now, officials said the time is needed for a thorough review.

From there, the county prosecutor is presented with the facts and evidence and decides whether or not to bring charges.

In a statement, Sgt. Ted Bohner, an Indiana State Police spokesman with the Bremen Post, said, “We ask the community leaders that have the power to partner with us with sharing facts, encouraging patience, and not spread rumors or details that are not true. The ISP is working diligently and with integrity and will turn all information over to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation.”
